Headaches and Chiropractic Care

Headaches seem like a pretty common occurrence these days. But while they might be common, they are definitely not normal. When your body expresses itself through pain, it’s trying to get your attention and let you know that something just isn't right. There are many causes of headaches including certain foods, light sensitivity, excess noise, dehydration, or daily stresses but one of the more common causes is a spinal misalignment, the technical term being cervicogenic. As today’s posture becomes progressively more of a problem, with constant texting and looking down at computer screens, the curvature in the neck starts to change and can lead to headaches and other problems down the line. When the bones in the neck are misaligned, the head itself may not be supported properly which can lead to subluxations affecting the nerves, muscles, and even blood supply of the head and neck.

So you may be asking yourself what can be done? Too often individuals have become accustomed to self medication which may mask potentially dangerous conditions and doesn’t do much to address the actual cause of the problem. Indiscriminate use and/or over-reliance on pain medications in lieu of a proper examination and diagnosis is not recommended. Early examination and diagnosis are essential to proper care.

Numerous research studies have shown that chiropractic adjustments are very effective for treating tension headaches, especially headaches that originate in the neck. Some patients noticed immediate relief of their symptoms, while some noticed a slow decline in their symptoms over time. Each person is different and each person will experience a difference in healing depending on the severity of the situation and how long they have been occurring.
